Home«About Us«Letter from the President and CEO
Dear Investors & Partners,
Over ten years ago, after finishing my morning meetings at an investment bank, I found myself with a free afternoon in New York City. I decided to visit a small homeless support center that my wife and I had supported but never visited. Touring this well respected and competently managed nonprofit, I realized that the information technology they used to track their core business of helping the homeless consisted almost entirely of 4X6 index cards. My PC-based Christmas card list employed more technology than this well run nonprofit. Without knowing it existed, I had stepped into the nonprofit digital divide.
That day, I resolved to try and help nonprofits gain access to the tools that businesses use to create wealth -- specifically, to use information technologies that I had seen work so well in the financial services community.
I founded TechFoundation to explore how we might help nonprofits with a structured offering of consulting services and pilot programs. During our beginning years of operations, we refined our mission and narrowed our program as we came to better understand the needs of the community and our role as a creator and manager of alliances between technology companies and nonprofits. From inner city schools to environmental groups to community dance groups, our nonprofits have benefited from improved access to the technology, expertise, and capital they need to advance their social missions. We are proud of the role that TechFoundation has already played in helping over 500 nonprofits better acquire, understand, and use information technology.
We are deeply indebted to the many supporters and employees who have given so generously to our new organization. It has been a rewarding year in our start-up environment as we seek to build a risk-taking culture that combines social mission with corporate capacity. We look forward to deepening our social impact by building business-based models for our programs and helping many more organizations bridge the nonprofit digital divide.
Thank you for your interest and continued support,
Very truly yours,
David Altshuler
